Caring for the Heart of The World

Join us for this family-friendly art class, led by New Wave's current Artist-in-Residence, Ana Maria Velasco and Pranoo Kumar of Rohi’s Readery. Celebrating Women’s History Month, Ana Maria will guide participants through centering exercises followed by storytelling, ritual offerings, and art-making.

Ana Maria will read through the children’s book Cuidando del Corazon del Mundo (Caring for the Heart of The World), a coloring book for which she made illustrations for, inspired by her travels through La Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta in Colombia (the largest coastal mountain range in the world and one of the most irreplaceable conservation sites in the planet) and the worldview of the indigenous communities (descendants of the pre-Columbian Tayrona people), who inhabit it.

Focusing on the practices taught by the elders from these indigenous cultures, and their belief that earth is a live entity, a woman, and our mother, participants will engage in activities that will invite us to reflect on our interdependence, our relationship to nature, and to all beings, ending with the creation of a collective art piece as well as personal drawings for each participant to take home.
